Why Trending Chasing Isn’t a Strategy for Success

Imagine it’s Thursday. You’re scrolling through TikTok on your lunch break and see five videos in a row using the exact same song. Everyone is getting thousands of likes, so you think, "I should do that too!" You spend days filming it, only for the video to get stuck with 200 views and zero sales. By then, everyone has already moved on to the next big thing.

That is the cycle of a trend. While trends are fun, they are often the least effective way to grow a business. If you only do what is popular this week, people will forget who you are by next week. Trends are fleeting moments; they aren't a foundation.

What is a Strategy?

A strategy is like a map for a long trip. It ensures you actually arrive at your destination instead of just driving in circles. A strong strategy has four key parts:

  • A Purpose: Why are you posting this?

  • A Message: What do you want your brand to say?

  • An Audience: Who are you trying to reach?

  • A Goal: What do you want the viewer to do next?

Trends vs. Plans

Think of trends like sprinkles on a cupcake. They make the top look pretty, but the cake—your strategy—is the part that actually matters!

Trends can get you quick attention, but they shouldn't be your entire plan. If you are always chasing what is "viral," your brand will never stand for anything solid. Before you jump on the next big audio or filter, ask yourself these five questions:

  1. Does this help people recognize my brand?

  2. Is this something my specific audience cares about?

  3. Does this trend show off what I am an expert in?

  4. Does this fit my brand’s personality?

  5. Can I tie this back to my products or my values?

If the answer is "no," the trend is just a distraction. It might be fun, but it will cost you time and money without helping you grow.
